The splits looks like a fairly straightforward exercise especially when you watch someone half your age perform them, but they can actually end up being one of the most challenging moves you ever do.
Asking your body to perform this impressive looking exercise may seem like a good idea at first but before you attempt the splits, let's bulletproof your groin by training for them. Even if it's not your goal to attain full sides splits, you will still gain results using these exercises. Practicing the splits is great for your joint health, flexibility, and balance; qualities that become more and more important as we age. All of these things factor into how much range of motion we retain, our physical independence, and overall quality of life.
If you can't get into the full side split, it could very well be a weakness on both sides of the joint so I'm going to show you some exercises to help unlock it. The key thing to remember is to not force your body to get into the position too fast and give it time to adapt to the different poses and stretches. Remember to never move into painful ranges. If your body isn’t ready for a split and you try to make it do a split, you are elongating a muscle further than it’s able to go, which can result in a muscle strain, and we certainly don't want that!
